While looking through, or better say listening to, numerous animated films for many years, I was looking for an ideal company for my future work. By means of natural selection, the imaginary company was inevitably joined by the composer and sound editor Artem Fadeev. So, when we were to work at the sound part of the Nose, or the Conspiracy of Mavericks, we already knew whom to offer this job. It’s worth noting that Artem has fully delivered upon expectations, or more so. He’s got a phenomenal ear for music, an ideal sense of form and texture, and what’s more important, a truly creative work approach, so he is always there to come up with an original solution, sometimes even several alternative ones for literally each episode covering various nuances, far beyond the expectations mentioned by the director. It is all possible due to his ability to fully inhabit the director’s intention. Atrem Fadeev’s professional characteristics doesn't come down to these qualities. It is multiplied by his personal character traits. I believe his being in demand among film directors is also boosted by his unresting energy, benevolence, comraderie and, the last but not the least, personal charm and a sense of humour. I'm looking forward to be working with this amazing master. Andrei Khrzhanovsky, a filmmaker, a People’s Artist of Russia, a laureate of State Prizes of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and the Russian Federation, a winner of the Russian Federation Government Award.
Dmitriy Geller
Russian animation director, artist.
Fifteen years ago, my film producer advised me to go to a record studio by saying, "They will help you there". At the studio, I was to work with the youngest sound engineer, Artem Fadeev. From the first shifts with him, I realized I would be more than just helped. We understood each other without words, and I realized I met my person. The ones who make films know how rare and lucky they are to find a professional whom they can fully trust with a part in their most precious, brilliant film of genius and who can add on to the film so that it becomes better and even more brilliant. Within quite a long period of life, fifteen years mostly uninterruptedly, we have created six films together. I have always wondered at Artem’s wonderful ability to hear it in a not-yet-sound film what a director wanted to convey, which fuelled confidence that we would succeed and the film would acquire its own language to speak to the audience. Artem is not only a good sound editor sensitive to the film-in-the-making, but also a composer. No wonder, our filmography was enriched by several works where he was credited not only as a sound editor, but also as a full- fledged co-author. I truly love those works as I ventured into experimenting with risky and unpredictable results, and Artem breathed Sound into them. I’d like to thank you, my friend and co-author, and I hope you will find time for more insane collaborations.

Artem is a partner in work, and a person with whom the work on sound solutions inthe film turns into a talk about meanings, ambiguity and impossibility, and other things that are difficult to convey in words or images but might be described in sounds. First of all, Artem is a musician, so his sound in films is set up as a tune with its own rhythm. It’s more important to move on from some common anticipated sound and break the ordinary through silence and pause to have a sound crucial in spirits. In this respect, Artem needs no instructions. Empathy and deep understanding make up the core of his approach.

It’s pure happiness, and a rare one, to find a specialist who can understand and bring to light everything that might be hidden from the author themselves. I was lucky, though. First, in Artem I’ve found a true professional, which is happiness in itself amidst such a great number of laymen. I remember how joyous we were at our incidental findings and revelations (or not really incidental since we were looking for them toghether). I also remember the treasures Artem brought us to enrich and brighten the existing material. Second, in him I’ve found a person that can reallyhear... That’s important: he can hear the things I can’t always make out. Inevitably, Iam surprised at the ordinary material becoming alive at some point. Artem is like a magician. He thinks in sounds and music which dissolve in a film to the pure joy of its creator, ‘That’s a smash!’. Now, I’m looking forward to another upcoming audio adventure with him, and I’m sure it would be a blast!
